What To Ask A Search Engine

A search engine can be a nifty tool. Besides directing you to websites that can give you answers about people, places, and things, a search engine can also answer quick questions for you.

For example, get the definition of an unfamiliar word by just typing it in.

Aren’t sure how to spell a word?  Just ask.

Need help figuring planning a drive? Get a distance and driving directions just by asking.

Not sure when meat is safe to eat?  Just ask.

Need to convert money? Just type it in.

How about a phone number for a local business?

Metric conversion is also simple.

Or a quick translation of a word or phrase.

Try checking movie showtimes.

Or check a score.

Google can also give you a calorie count for your dinner.

And just for fun, type “zerg rush” into the Google search box and hit the magnifying glass. Watch to see what happens.

There’s still a lot more Google and other search engines can do for you. Just try typing in a question and see what happens.

I am laughing as I read this, I am so old and have had a computer and used the internet so long I remember my favorite place to get answers was Ask Jeeves!! When they changed it to just ASK I stopped–apparently I liked having my own Jeeves!! And even worse I remember when you searched for something (may have been google, I have no idea) your search had to have the + sign in between each word to get what you were looking for and if you left the + off, it was a crap-shoot. So you can imagine how much I love just putting one word in most of the time and getting what I want!!

I want to know why, when I know the URL of a company, and I put that in the address bar, http://www.nnnnnnnn.com, I don’t go straight to their website? I will get the usual pages and pages of 127,327 “hits” and the “official” website will be 4 or 6 items down.
