A reader asks: ‘Windows 10 upgrade was free, right? Now a super Windows 7 machine is as much as $500 off. So which is better, a brand new Windows 10 machine or a Windows 7 and pay $119, or less, to upgrade?’
It’s simple. Just do the math. But also check out a couple of other factors. If you’re shopping for a new PC, make sure to compare the specs between the discounted Windows 7 PC and the Windows 10 model. (hard drive space, processor speed, quality of video card, and resolution of monitor if applicable.) Make sure the Windows 7 PC meets the requirements to upgrade to Windows 10. Most Windows 7 PCs do, but not all of them do.
If they are comparable, or the specs on the Windows 7 PC are fine for your needs, why not save the money. It won’t take you that long to download and install Windows 10. It’s a great way to save money. The way I calculate if something is worth my time is to pay myself at least $10 an hour. So if it takes 2 hours total to install Windows, that’s a pretty good deal.
