A reader wants to know where to find the upgrade to Windows 8.1. “ Where do I find the Win 8.1 upgrade? I am running Win 8 now. I guess I will want to upgrade to Win 10 when I can. I am already running Win 8.1 on my laptop so I assume I will be able to download Win 10 on it also?”
You’ll be able to upgrade that 8.1 laptop assuming that you’re up-to-date on your Windows updates. You’ll need to make sure that you’ve done the big 8.1.1 update and that you’ve installed the following updates that allow you to move to Windows 10:
If you aren’t set to automatically install updates, just type Check for updates into your search box and click on the result.
To upgrade from 8 to 8.1, you’ll need to go to the Windows store and find the the 8.1 update.
It shouldn’t be hard to find.
Then choose Download.
This update will take some time, but you will still be able to use your PC during the process. Then, unfortunately, the first thing you’ll need to do is run a whole bunch of updates to get Windows 8.1 up-to-date.
Then you should be ready to install Windows 10. This should be the last time you need to go through a process like this to get Windows up-to-date. In Windows 10, all updates download automatically, though you can choose when you want to restart the PC to install them.
