Boy, is it gray and rainy today! It is definitely one of those “I’d rather be anywhere, but here” days. So, in light of that, it’s time to do some computer chair traveling. Wikitravel’s goal is to provide free and accurate travel information for around the globe. With already over 17,000 guides, you are sure to find somewhere you’d like to learn about or travel to!
In the first block of text, you’ll find the site’s mission statement, as well as, the country navigation. Just click on the name of the country you want to visit and you will be transported to that country’s page, where you can find travel articles for it.
On the main page, you’ll find these sections:
Destination of the Month – Each month, a different destination is chosen to be highlighted. While I was there, the destination was Hiroshima, Japan. Click the More link after the teaser paragraph of information to learn more about it. To see previous destinations of the month, just click the Destination of the Month link and you’ll be able to choose from the other months as well. September was my favorite off of the list. I wanted to dive right into that picture of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada!
Off the Beaten Path – Each month, an Off the Beaten Path location is also chosen to be featured on the main page. This month it was Rietvlei Nature Preserve in South Africa. You can learn more by clicking the More link after the teaser paragraph. This works the same as the previous section. If you click the Off the Beaten Path link, you’ll be taken to the archives for it. It is set up in the same monthly style as the Destination of the Month section.
Discover – Here you will find “strange, but true” trivia about different places around the world. If you click the title, Discover, you will go to the main page for that section. On the front page of the site, there will be highlights featured. On the Discover page, you’ll find what is coming up, as well as, what is on hold. At the very bottom of the page, you’ll find links to the archives.
Travel News – Here you will find the latest in travel news. When you’re traveling, it is always good to be up to date on the news that may affect your travels.
Featured Articles – Here you will find select feature articles: one for the collaboration of the week and several under the newest “Start” categories.
Other Languages – Here you will find the other languages the pages are available in. Just choose the one you want and the page will reload in that language.
Well, I’m going to go learn more about Butchart Gardens in Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. So, tell me, where will you travel today, right from your computer chair?!
