John from Florida writes: Your news tip put out the statement that Yahoo was going to close down classic mail. Does that mean they are going to force us to have to pay for some form of Yahoo Mail? I use Yahoo mail, I don’t pay for it currently. Are they just going to start shutting down accounts? I’d like to know so I can start moving stuff off my account folders. I would imagine a lot more people aren’t sure what all this means too. Will you please respond? Thank you very much!
John, no need to worry. Yahoo! is just closing down older versions of its mail service, making sure that everyone upgrades to the new version of Yahoo! Mail, which has a different look. The e-mail service is still free and your account will not be shut down.
One change you may notice is that Yahoo! will now scan messages to show you ads based on the content of your e-mails. This is the same system that Gmail uses.
You can opt out of the targeted ads by heading over to the Yahoo! Ad Interest Manager page here and choosing Opt Out or you can select what kinds of ads you’d care to see. You can’t opt out of seeing advertising, though; only out of Yahoo! scanning your mail content to target the ads to your interests.
Hope that clears up any confusion.
