Will My XP System Be Safe To Use In A Couple Of Years?

Wednesday, February 12th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips

Elliot from Ocala, Florida writes:

I just have a theoretical question. With Win XP not being supported by Microsoft after April, won’t the bad guys start going to attack the newer systems ?
Suppose you put your win XP hard drive in storage for a year or two until the bad guys forget about it, then reinstall it. Don’t you think you would have a good operating system ?

Elliot, the bad guys are already attacking newer systems. The difference is that there are teams of security experts at Microsoft working to find ways to repel these attacks. When they discover a vulnerability , they come up with a way to remove it and to fix that vulnerability so the attack doesn’t happen again. After April 8, 2014 , they will no longer be doing that for XP.

XP will not only be more vulnerable because hackers will target the unprotected operating system, but because those same hackers can look at the security patches Microsoft issues for Windows 7 and 8 and work backwards to find previously unknown vulnerabilities in XP.

Malware directed at XP isn’t going to go away after a couple of years. Computer viruses are just as persistent as biological ones.

    Well said Cynthia.

Come on people just give it up, get rid of XP. Upgrade to Vista, or Win 7. Wipe the hard drive and install some version of Linux, or just shut the thing down and go read a book, but give it up, XP is dead.

Unless of course you like having people taking over your computer and using it to send spam, and or stealing all of you passwords and personal information.

That is an interesting question. Are people who still run the old NT Server being bothered with viruses? I think a good test for this senario would be to bring up an install of Windows 95 and see how long it would take to get a virus. The problem with this, though, would be finding a browser that would work on the modern web sites. Even IE6 won’t work now. And I’m sure IE8 will be shoved to the dead heap in the not too distant future. But all that said, I agree with the others – give it up, and go to Vista on the XP machines. Or if you have a DuoCore, go to 7. That’s my two cents.

I for one will, as all the rest, hate to see XP head for the ‘here after’.
There are a couple of programs I can use with XP that will cost me a mint to purchase if I want to run a newer version.
Would it be possible to run XP for my programs if the computer that they are on never touches the internet?
