Will Windows 10 Switch My Anti-Virus?

Virus protection should be a priority for everyone. One of our readers is very concerned about what will happen with a Windows 10 upgrade. He writes: “Every time I think I’m ready to update to Windows 10 a new question crops up. Windows sent me an email touting Win10- mentioning it has better security thru Windows Defender. My question is upon updating will Win10 try to make Windows Defender the default anti-virus? I’ve recently switched from AVG to Avast-so will I have to designate my  preferred anti-virus? (upgrade will be from Win8.1).”

Windows Defender is actually the default virus protection for your PC anyway. It comes as part of Windows. But you can easily shut it off and install any third-party virus protection that you choose.

In fact, when you go to install third-party software, Windows defender usually prompts you to shut it off in order to install your new security software.

When you do the upgrade process from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, your installed third-party security software is not affected at all. Windows 10 does not overwrite your installed programs, files or settings. Included in those settings is your choice of security software.

You may find that you do need to turn off your security software temporarily to do the upgrade. Not everyone does, but some folks have found that to be an issue with their upgrade.

The notice you received from Windows was touting the improved performance of the Windows Defender protection, which does a pretty good job of protecting PCs when paired with an anti-malware program like Malware Bytes.

It is a good idea to make sure that any security software you’re using is compatible with Windows 10. This shouldn’t be much of an issue, nearly every major service, including Avast is compatible.

Unfortunately, not Rogers. To date, their security software isn’t compatible with Windows 10.
