Will Windows 8.1 Leave Me In The Cloud?

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips

G. Pappy from Oregon writes:

I am getting used to win8 but it looks like 8.1 will tie everything to the cloud. I live in a motorhome and enjoy retirement wandering around this beautiful country we live in. My problem is that I often have no internet connection or an unsecured connection. I am aware I can tether with my cell phone but that uses considerable data. Is there a way to upgrade to 8.1 without everything going to the cloud? I know my email is and has been there but I don’t care for storing all my pictures and documents in a cloud!

You’ll be relieved to know that’s there’s not much difference¬† between using Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Most of the changes are in the interface and have nothing to do with cloud connectivity. Just like Windows 8, you can choose to use it online or offline. You will need to connect to the Internet for your free upgrade, but after that, it’s up to you. You can choose to connect only when you want to go online, check e-mail or do Windows updates.

Saving photos and documents to the cloud is an option, just like with Windows 8 or even Windows 7. It’s not required.

You should also know that most of the country is covered by either 3G or 4G (and now there is a program (App) that will allow you to connect to 2G for free where 2G is still available. 2G is slow as molasses but still works. My device is a MiFi unit about the size of a pack of cards and it’s $23 a month for 2 Gig (that’s a lot of data) but if you use it up in the month you don’t lose connectivity (it just drops to 520 meg with no overage charges). Also the unit rolls over any unused data (up to 500 meg per month). Just google MiFi hotspot for details.

If you are talking about just wanting to USE your computer like for playing solitaire, look at emails that you may think were already downloaded to your machine and such I have to agree with you. I am not to enthused about 8 or 8.1 since Everything you try do seems to be online anymore.
