Windows 10: Am I Too Late?

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips, Windows 10

The deadline for the free upgrade to Windows 10 was July 29. Since then I’ve heard from a few readers all with the same basic question.  Is it too late to get the free upgrade?  The answer is yes.

Some of you had trouble getting the upgrade to download and install when you tried last on the 28th and the 29th. You could certainly attempt to contact Microsoft, but I’m pretty sure they’ll tell you the time has passed. That’s one of the risks of waiting until the last minute. Had you upgraded earlier in the year, there would have been some time left to troubleshoot the issues.

Another reader wrote that she had upgraded and switched back to Windows 7. She wanted to know if she could still upgrade for free at a later date. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Had you decided to upgrade again at any point up until the deadline you could have upgraded for free, but once that deadline passed, your time was up.

So if you didn’t take the free upgrade by July 29, you’re going to have to pay to switch to Windows 10.

*Note:  I’ve heard some reports of people still being able to activate free versions of Windows 10, but I wouldn’t count on that lasting.

After updating to Windows 10, you can switch to Windows 7 and back to Windows 10 when ever you want. Windows 7 activation is still tied to the product key, and the Windows 10 activation is tied to your computer. You will have to download a disk image for Windows 10 and burn it to a DVD or Flash Drive first. When reinstalling Windows 10, click on “I don’t have a product key”, and Windows 10 will activate automatically. You can also keep Windows 7 and install Windows 10 in a dual boot setup. I have reinstalled both Windows 7 and 10, and am currently running both operating systems on the same PC.

You can also still get Windows 10 for free. It is available to people who use assistive technologies. You don’t have to prove you use such tools to get the free upgrade.

Walter, your comment on dual boot is fine, IF the user has TWO licenses for their computer. The Windows 7 license is not legal for that once it’s been used to upgrade to W10.
