The deadline for the free upgrade to Windows 10 was July 29. Since then I’ve heard from a few readers all with the same basic question. Is it too late to get the free upgrade? The answer is yes.
Some of you had trouble getting the upgrade to download and install when you tried last on the 28th and the 29th. You could certainly attempt to contact Microsoft, but I’m pretty sure they’ll tell you the time has passed. That’s one of the risks of waiting until the last minute. Had you upgraded earlier in the year, there would have been some time left to troubleshoot the issues.
Another reader wrote that she had upgraded and switched back to Windows 7. She wanted to know if she could still upgrade for free at a later date. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Had you decided to upgrade again at any point up until the deadline you could have upgraded for free, but once that deadline passed, your time was up.
So if you didn’t take the free upgrade by July 29, you’re going to have to pay to switch to Windows 10.
*Note: I’ve heard some reports of people still being able to activate free versions of Windows 10, but I wouldn’t count on that lasting.
