Windows 10: Personalize Your Start Menu

Many of you were pretty darn happy to see that the Start Menu was back in Windows 10.  Personally, I think that the Windows 10 Start Menu is just about the best thing every. It’s a one-stop shop to find and do everything in Windows 10.

Today we’ll look at some tips for personalizing the look to suit your needs. Open your start menu and choose “Settings.”

Then pick Personalization.

Choose Start

The first setting decides how many tiles are available in your Start Menu.

Switch to On to see more tiles. Your change will be displayed in the preview window at the top.

You can also decide if you want to see occasional suggestions in the Start Menu.

Below Windows 10 is making a suggestion for a game I might want to download based on my previous Windows Store purchases.

I find the “most-used apps” function to be very handy.

Switch it on and you’ll have quicker access to your most-used apps.

Turning on Recently-added apps is a good way to avoid downloading something and forgetting all about it.

If you preferred the look of the metro screen in Window 8.1, you can make the Start Menu full screen.

Normally,  your desktop looks like this with the Start Menu open.

With full screen on, it displays like this:

This is also where you can decide to display recently opened items in jump lists on your taskbar.

For example, when I left-click on Word on the taskbar, I see a list of recently opened documents.

We’re not done personalizing the Start Menu, yet. Next time we’ll look at how to control which folders appear on your Start menu.

The Start Menu and the Full Screen both look the same to me. What am I missing?

When I typed in personalize, it looked very different from yours. I didn’t see any of the things you showed. What did I do wrong?

  3. […] 7. Well, I’ve got good news for you. The Windows 10 Start Menu is highly customizable.  Last week, I showed you how to give the Start Menu the look you want.  In this tip, we’ll learn how to add folders to the Start […]

I have lost my start menu, edge and cortana. The start button is there, but when I click on it, I get the message that there is a critical error and to restart. On rare occasions, I do get the Windows 10 screen. Hard to do apps, when you can’t see them. I open Word by opening a previous document and click new in the menu. Any help out there, I have tried several suggested fixes but have not been successful. Thanks
