Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 by | Filed Under: Windows 8

Janice from Evans, GA writes:

I purchased the Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 thru my company’s home purchase program. You need Windows 7 or higher to run this program. So, I go to Best Buy to get it, and it’s not in stock.  Windows 8 has warning that if you are running Windows  Vista  (I am) then you will have to load 8 and reload all your programs. Are you ready for the question? What should I do? Order 7 from Amazon and load it(what warnings will come with that) or should I go ahead and buy 8 and hope I have backup for all of my programs. I have a Toshiba laptop purchased around 2005 and I do not even know if it will support Windows 8.

In your situation, I’d probably suggest staying with Windows 7. You should be able to purchase the Windows 7 Upgrade since you have Vista. The program you purchase online via Amazon will be the same version you would have purchased at Best Buy. You could also purchase Windows 7 at or directly from Microsoft at

To learn how to find out if your laptop is compatible with Windows 8, check out this article on Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.

Hope this helps,

I had windows xp on a laptop (asus) and bought windows 7 and installed it with no problems at all. no vista, and CERTAINLY NO windows 8 (which to all observations sounds like a monster). 7’s up and running on my backup laptop, and Im happy with it.

    Good luck.

a while back i used the $40 windows 8 upgrade offer on a vista machine i had, and it works fine (or at least as well as windows 8 can work)…. i wound up having to do a clean install of my vista first, but even as bad as 8 is, it still works better than vista did on that machine…. (about every 3rd automatic windows update vista got, it would force the machine into doing endless loop reboots)…… i ran the windows update adviser on the machine first and it passed all tests except for a minor bios warning, which i did some research on and i learned would not actually be a problem…. as unpopular as windows 8 seems to be right now, it is probably not going anywhere
