Windows 8.1: How To Take A Screenshot

Thursday, August 14th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Windows 8

James from Yelm, Washington asks:

How do you take a screen shot in Windows 8.1?

James, that depends on the device you’re using. If you are using a computer with a PrtScn key, press that key and then open up a program like paint and press Ctrl + V to paste your screenshot. You can hold down Alt + PrtScn to just copy your active window if you have more than one window open.

Pressing the Windows key and PrtScn key together will take a screenshot… directly into your Screenshot folder in Pictures.

…then send it directly into your Screenshot folder in Pictures.

If you are using a Windows tablet, such as a Surface Pro – press the down volume key and the Windows button on the tablet to take a screen shot that will go straight to the screenshots folder.

If you don’t have a PrtScn key on your keyboard or just want more control over your screenshot, you can use the snipping tool. This is especially nice, since it allows you to cut out only the part of the screenshot that you want. Search for “snipping tool” in the search charm or just start typing “snipping tool” while in the metro screen. Then click or tap the Snipping Tool icon.

Choose New to take a screenshot.

The whole area of the screenshot will be highlighted.

Here’s where you can customize your screenshot. Click the drop-down menu to change the shape of the area you capture. Choose between freeform, rectangle, capturing the whole screen or just the active window.

If you choose freeform or rectangle, use the cursor to draw the area you wish to capture.  A window will then open with your screenshot. (If you choose full screen or window that window opens immediately.)

Now you can edit that screenshot if you like. Click the drop-down menu for the pen tool and you can choose a pen color and draw on your screenshot.

You can also adjust color, thickness and the type of pen used.

Then you can draw much neater lines than I have on your screenshot.

Select the Highlighter…

…and you can highlight portions of the screenshot.

Use the eraser icon to remove anything you’ve drawn and want to remove.

Click the save icon to save. The mail icon to send the screen shot via e-mail.

As you see, you have a lot of options to grab that screenshot you need.

  1. […] Once these images are saved to your computer, you can make any necessary edits and upload as needed.  If you don’t see a save option, you can take a screenshot of the image and crop it down. […]
