Windows Live Family Safety

Microsoft has come up with an effective, user friendly, parental control tool in Windows Live Family Safety. If you’re concerned about your children’s exposure to objectionable online material, or if you’d like to enforce other computer restrictions, Windows Live Family Safety can help.

image

When the download and installation is complete and you’ve opened the program, the welcome screen will appear. The first step is to sign in with either a Hotmail or Live Mail account, and registration is required.

image

After you’ve registered, you’re given the option to monitor an existing account, or create a new one. For this, I created a new account.

image

After the account has been created, click on the familysafety.live.com link, and you’ll be taken to a website where settings can be adjusted.

When you arrive at the site, links to settings choices appear in the list shown below, found at the left of the screen or, in more detail at the center of the window.

Click on a link to begin assigning settings adjustments. Web filtering will be demonstrated here but, while you’re at the site, take a look at the other choices. Many of the limitations can be adjusted using a slider (seen on the right below). The time limits restrictions are controlled on a calendar. As you can see below, Kevin is allowed to use basic online communication. Pull the slider up, and the restrictions become more severe. At the top, is the Allow list only, where parents can set only certain allowed sites to be visited.

Hopefully, with this program, you can rest a little easier when your kids are on the computer.
