WinUtilities Free Edition

I’m always looking for new products that will clean junk from my computer. As a result, after repeatedly installing new junk removing software, more junk accumulates. While I have kept, and still use, several other utilities, none seem to clean as thoroughly as WinUtilities. Most maintenance software misses or ignores certain items, including WinUtilities, but this one seems to find and correct more problems than any of the others. It also includes more features than any I’ve tried.

The download and installation is easy, with only a couple steps in the installation process requiring attention. The first is the request to install the Ask Toolbar. If you’d like that feature included, just click Next in that window. I passed on that option and on the next, which creates a Start Menu Folder. If you don’t want a Start Menu folder created, check the box. I did allow a desktop icon, although the program launches when installation is complete. To download WinUtilities, click here.

The interface is simple and straightforward. There are four tabs; Modules, 1-Click Maintenance, Scheduled Tasks, and Status. Unless you’ve purchased the upgrade, you won’t be able to schedule tasks, and Status just gives a rundown on options and updates.

So, if you like tinkering (as I do), you’ll probably spend most of your time in Modules.

If you don’t, 1-Click Maintenance is the place for you. Just select what type of maintenance you want done, by checking the boxes (or use the default setting), and click the big orange button.

To the left, in the Modules tab, you’ll find six buttons; Clean Up & Repair, Optimize & Improve, Privacy & Safety, Files & Folders, Registry Tools, and System Tools. Each of these opens a sub menu with several more options. Rather than attempt to explain all the features, I’ve just listed them all below, along with the explanations provided by WinUtilities. I didn’t test all of the listed features, but each one tested, worked well.
