Ronald from California says,
i have a printer problem. i wrote a question to the internet and received an answer but fail to understand it. can you translate for me? thanks.
I have an hp wirless printer. everytime i shut down or lose connection, i have to reinstall printer. Why won’t it save to my laptop? What’s the fix?
Don’t give it a dynamic address (i.e. don’t just let DHCP assign it every time) — give it either a static or reserved dynamic address.
Otherwise the computers will not find it at the address that it had when it was installed for them if it changes addresses. The same is true for other network infrastructure, like wireless access points.”
Every device on a network must have an address, and it must be a unique address to that network. Otherwise, there are conflicts and devices don’t work. When you set up a wireless printer, it must have an IP address. Often time, when you set up the printer, you tell your wireless router to give it an IP. When this happens, every time it is turned off and back on, it could be getting a different address assigned from the router. If this happens, the laptop will not recognize the printer because it is looking for it at a different address (think of it kind of like the postal service – if you move and don’t change your address, you won’t get your mail.)
If you have the instruction manual for the printer, look for instructions on how to configure the network settings, and set it to a static or manual (unchanging) IP address. On most networks, this is usually in the 192.168.1.x range, and I’d recommend setting it to something like 3 or 4 for that last number. To go further, you could look at your router user manual and find directions to reserve that IP address for just that printer.
