Working Together: Vista and Google Calendars

Windows Vista includes a built-in calendar application that’s pretty slick, but as a Google Calendar addict, I’d like to view my Google calendar on my desktop instead. And that’s where Vista’s “Subscribe To” calendar feature comes in pretty handy. Let’s see what we’ve got, shall we?!

To subscribe to your Google Calendar, you’ll first need to get the iCal link to your calendar. To do that, in Google Calendar, go to Settings, Calendars and then select your calendar from the list.

You should then see a Private Address section:

Right click on the iCal link and choose Copy Shortcut to copy the link to your clipboard.

Now, open the Windows Vista calendar and click on the Subscribe button on the toolbar:

Paste the URL into the textbox and then hit the Next button:

After a few short moments, you’ll see the next screen:

The main thing you want to choose on this screen is the Update Interval, which will keep the calendar automatically synced. You can also change the name of your calendar if you’d like.

That’s all there is to it. Notice the blue appointments are the ones that came from the Google Calendar:

Happy calendaring!
