WS App Review: Angry Birds Star Wars
Angry Birds, the hit physics based game from Rovio, is back with a Star Wars themed adventure. Every bird is cast as a popular character from the hit original movie series with exciting new abilities and humorous cut-scenes.
The core of the game is still the same. The goal is to use the on-screen slingshot to throw the birds at the structures the pigs have built to destroy all the pigs and as much of the structure you can. You can increase your score by using fewer birds or by using the special abilities of the birds to inflict more damage, but each level is completed when all the pigs are destroyed.
The new Star Wars theme enables features such as force push from the black bird playing Ben Konobi or firing a blaster from yellow bird playing Han Solo. Each bird brings their own special ability to the table, and the combination of Star Wars sound effects and themed cut-scenes left me highly entertained. The new abilities bring fresh life to what is a strangely satisfying game in its simplicity. Beating a level may be easy, but achieving the highest scores and unlocking all the bonus content can take dozens of hours.
What’s not to love? Honestly, not much. If you played Angry Birds and didn’t like the game, then you probably won’t like Angry Birds Star Wars, but if you did like the original game you should definitely pick this one up. If you’ve never tried Angry Birds but want a fun way to waste a few… dozen… hours of your time then this is a definite buy.
- Music/Abilities from Star Wars add a lot of novelty and enjoyment
- Solid game dynamics remain from the original – if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
- Same basic gameplay means nothing revolutionary.
- If you’re a pig farmer this may offend you.
