WS App Review: Epocrates
How amazing would it be to be able to carry around a full drug information database, interaction checker, medical calculator and medical reference suite used by the top doctors in the world for free? Epocrates offers an amazing app for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone which lets you do all that and more!
Let’s say your doctor prescribes Lovastian to you and you’re wondering if the drug has any interactions with drugs you’re already on. Well, your doctor should have checked, but they are human, so they may have missed something. With Epocrates, all you need to do is tap on interaction check and enter in your medications – including the newly prescribed Lovastian – to see the possible interactions.
Did someone tell you about a drug they are taking and you want to know the full details? How much does it cost? What are the dosing requirements? What kind of adverse reactions does the drug have? Tap on Drugs and search the database to find all this information! Epocrates even finds generics of drugs, too!
Ever have a doctor change a pill to morning instead of evening? Ever try to figure out what pill it was after the doctor said something like “The water pill – take it in the morning”? Tap on the Pill ID and search by imprint, color, shape, coating to find out what exactly the pill is. It even shows you a picture of the actual pill so you can be 100% sure you’ve got the right one!
There’s all kinds of info here! Have you wondered what your BMI is? What the gestational age of a fetus for a pregnant friend? What your LDL level is? Use the vast amount of calculators available to double check information you’ve been given by your doctor – it’s easy!.
- Amazing depth of information, calculators and tables.
- Pill search genuinely unique and useful
- Easy to use interface
- Knowledge can be dangerous, and it’s important to remember having access to this information doesn’t make you a doctor. Consult a medical professional with information you find and use this for reference, not as “the final word” on things like interactions as some interactions may be worth the negative side effects.
