XP Hold-Out – What Are My Options?

Jim from New Jersey writes:

I’m one of the XP hold-outs: I am not willing to upgrade $400 for a modern computer for downloading emails and basic web browsing.

My computer is somewhat limited and probably won’t tolerate the upgrade to the next Windows version. What options do I have?

First of all Jim, I’d check out this article to learn about the tools Microsoft offers to help you see if your computer is up to an upgrade.

You’re right, $400 in awful lot of money to spend for basic web browsing and e-mail. If that’s all you want out of a computer, may I suggest you consider switching to a tablet?

A good basic Android tablet will more than meet your e-mail and web-browsing needs. We’ve offered several models here for around the $100 mark. You can certainly find a nice one for less than $200. There’s also the option of an iPad, but the iPad Mini starts around the $300 mark and the larger models will run you as much as a good laptop. If you’d like to stick with Windows, there are Windows tablets starting at less than $200. You could also pickup a Chromebook laptop for around the $250 mark.

Jim, may also consider switching to a free version of Linux, such as Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Although there is a slight learning curve, the software is free and you don’t have to worry about end of life anytime soon.

I agree with installing a Linux operating system instead of upgrading the hardware. Linux Mint is another excellent distribution for both beginners and experts alike. It has the look and feel of Windows XP (if you so wish)! The best part is that it is free for life and only “upgrade” the software if and when you want, and again, for free.

My hold out is d/t my proprietary software not compatible with 64 bit machines and the fact that XP does everything I require and want it to. My partner has a computer with dual boot allowing use of XP OR Vista, I will need to remind her to only use Vista for online activities. I am considering purchasing a similar USED computer or just adding 32 bit Vista or Win 7 to my desktop machine.
For ‘on the go’ browsing and email, smartphone or tablet are fine. I received a Surface Tablet with Windows RT for Christmas – not at all impressed with the RT OS but may eventually become comfortable with it.

Switching to a tablet for basic email and web browsing is a good idea with the following modifications. A blutooth keyboard and a stand! Typing on a tablet is annoying! You can also (and it’s super simple) add the Android operating system to a desktop or laptop. I put one on an SD card just to see what it was all about. Took about 30 minutes and I was up and running.
