Yes…Facebook has done it again!

Facebook keeps changing, and it’s our job to help you keep you up to date with the latest renovations on today’s most popular social network site.  In this latest edition, we will be discussing the new layout of Facebook and how to navigate your way around your own profile as well as your friends’ profiles.  Then, we will be talking about the latest addition to Facebook – the new Timeline feature.

Let’s start with your homepage – your News Feed.  On the top and center of the page, you have three options: “Update Status,” “Add Photo/Video,” or “Ask Question.”  If you click on “Update Status,” you can enter in a status update and post it onto the News Feed.  Based on your privacy settings, your friends can see this status update.  You can edit each status update to be private, public, or custom.  This feature is the same as before.  At the bottom of the text box where you can enter in your status update, you can click on the icon of the person to tag any of your friends in your update, and you can also select/tag your location by clicking on the mini pointer icon next to the person icon.  On the right lower hand of the box, you can select who can view this update by clicking on the down arrow next to the icon of two people (“friends”).  And finally, by clicking “Post,” your status becomes Facebook official.

The second option is to add a photo or video onto your Facebook page.  You can upload a video/picture from your computer, use your webcam to take and upload a photo or video instantly, or create a new photo album.  Once you select the photo or video of your choosing, you can again tag any friends, the location, and control the privacy setting.  The great thing about this feature is that you can choose different privacy settings for anything.  The third option is “Ask Question.”  This is a new feature that allows you to poll your friends.  You can post a question, and then you can options so your friends can vote accordingly.  Once again, the privacy settings on this can also be controlled if you want to limit your viewership on a certain poll question.  And in your choices, you can select/tag locations or pages.  For instance, if you are trying to choose a restaurant to go to – you can tag as many restaurant options as you’d like, and have your friends vote on the poll.

On the left hand side of the webpage, there is still the same side panel that lists all your Favorites – your News Feed, Messages, and Events, followed by Applications, Groups you are a part of, and any Lists of Friends you have made.  The new Mini News Feed we discussed last time is on the right hand column of the page above your Chat list.  Luckily, some of the main features of the Facebook homepage have stayed fairly consistent!

The viewing of pictures is different now.  When you view a picture, the comments and information are displayed on the right hand side.  If it is a picture album, you can scroll through the album and view pictures back-to-back by clicking on the white right and left arrows located on the sides of the image.  On the bottom of the photo, you can “Like” the photo, “Tag Photo,” or click on the album as a whole (i.e. “Mobile Uploads) by clicking on the name of the album, which appears underlined when you move your mouse over it.

On the right hand side, first it lists the person who posted the photo (including the date and time it was posted).  If this is a photo you have posted,  there are some additional options available.  You can “Add a Description,” Tag, and Edit the photo.  This includes tagging the location where the photo was taken.  Then you can like, comment, unfollow/follow post, share, or edit.  When you unfollow a post, it no longer appears in your News Feed, and you will not receive any updates about it.  And finally, you can comment below in the text box as you please.

On the upper right hand corner of an image, there is a little tool icon next to an “X” icon.  The “X” icon exits out of the picture.  If you click on the tool icon, you can select some of the same as well as some new functions.  You can add the location, rotate the picture right or left, download the photo and save the file to your computer, make the picture your profile picture, or delete the photo.  However, if the picture is not a picture you have posted, the only options that will appear will be: Add Location, Download, or Report Photo (if it is offensive in any way).  Remember, you can only make a picture your profile picture if you have either posted it yourself or if you are tagged in it.

In terms of your tagged photos, you can remove or add to your profile as you wish.  This option is listed underneath the time of the picture at the top right hand side.  It will say “On your profile.”  You can select “Remove” if you no longer want this on your profile.  In a reverse situation, if you want to add something to your profile, you can select “Add to Profile.”
